Thailand’s Seasons
First up, let’s talk about the seasons that can determine when the best time to visit Thailand is. The weather can be divided into three seasons – the hot season, the wet season, and the cool season.
Cool Season (November to February): In general this is the best time to visit Thailand, meaning it is also the busiest time! The weather is pleasantly warm and dry, making it perfect for exploring bustling cities like Bangkok, or lounging on the stunning beaches of Phuket and Krabi. Plus, this is prime time for festivals like Loy Krathong and the famous Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan.
Hot Season (March to May): Things start to heat up all over the country! Temperatures soar, but if you can handle the heat, this is still a great time to visit. The beaches are calling your name, and it’s ideal for diving and snorkelling around the Andaman Sea or the Gulf of Thailand. Songkran Festival falls in April, a huge nationwide water fight to celebrate Thai New Year (and a great way to beat the heat!)
Wet Season (June to October): Bring your umbrella, because it’s the monsoon season! But hey, don’t let a little rain dampen your spirits. It can still be the best time to visit Thailand if you are looking for great value. The landscapes are lush and green, and you can score some sweet deals on accommodations. Plus, if you’re into off-the-beaten-path adventures, this is the time to explore places like Chiang Mai or the rainforests of Khao Sok National Park.

The Best Time to Visit Thailand by region
Now, let’s zoom in on different regions:
Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai): The cool season (November to February) is perfect for exploring the cultural wonders of these regions without breaking a sweat. Plus, it’s when the famous Yi Peng lantern festival lights up the skies! Between February – April some northern areas can suffer from bad air pollution due to crop burning.
Southern Thailand – Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi): Aim for the cool season (November to February) for optimal beach weather and island hopping adventures. But if you’re a budget traveler, the shoulder season (March – June) can be a steal with fewer crowds and still decent weather.
Southern Thailand – Gulf of Thailand (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao): This area is slightly different to the rest of Thailand as it isn’t affected by the South West monsoon season that causes the wet season in the rest of the country. Head there between December and August for glorious sunny days. September to November is the rainy season here.
Bangkok and Central Thailand: You can’t go wrong with the cool season (November to February) here. The temperatures are milder, making it ideal for temple hopping and street food feasting.
